Rags 2 Riches is an accessories line based in Manila, Philippines. Started in 2007, the for-profit social enterprise began working with poor women who made rugs from excess fabric found in dump sites. Initially that is how the women made a living. The company was created to give structure to these women so they could avoid exploitation. Rags 2 Riches seeks to empower these women by equipping them with skills and financial and health training. The goal is to see these women make an actual living, as opposed to just getting by.
The company partnered with local designers like Oliver Tolentino and Rajo Laurel, to make the rugs into stylish accessories and sell them. The partnerships were successful, and the women learned how to produce on a schedule and respond to market demands. The result is chic and classic items. They are representative of the Philippino women, strong, durable, and beautiful. They are items with a story behind them that are also benefiting women in need.
